Earlier in March we said goodbye to Performance Specialist Alex Willis, who left us to join the Army.
Happily, his place has been filled by Tara Guerin, who is no stranger to The Altitude Centre.

‘During my degree programme I completed a six-month internship at The Altitude Centre (when we were based in Putney) in 2011. I was the first intern Richard took on, and it was a really fun time.

‘Prior to joining The Altitude Centre, my knowledge on altitude training and AMS was fairly limited but during my time at Putney, I developed a huge interest in hypoxia.

‘My internship opened up the opportunity of the National Altitude Training Centre in Limerick, as part of the University of Limerick. A lecturer of mine, Professor Phil Jakeman, contacted Richard about setting up a residential altitude training centre where athletes can live and sleep at various levels of altitude, and then train at sea level; based on the live high train low principle.

‘This got the go ahead and by the time I started my final year, the house was ready to be used. I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to complete my dissertation using this facility. I also completed four-month placement as an Assistant Exercise Physiologist at Team Bath High Performance Centre at Bath University, where I worked with a range of professional athletes.

‘Following my graduation in 2012, I decided to do some travelling in Australia, where I worked as a Physiotherapy Assistant for six months, and Asia. Returning to Ireland last October, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to come back to The Altitude Centre.

‘My first four weeks have been great. The team here are brilliant and they have been so welcoming. After my induction with Alex, I began taking clients for consultations and exercise sessions in our chamber and I now feel like I have settled in. All the clients are so dedicated and it’s fantastic they appreciate and understand what we have to offer, and why altitude training is so beneficial. Trump Street is an amazing place to work and the facilities here are top class.

‘I am training to complete my first half marathon and I am looking forward to experiencing the benefits training in the chamber will have on my performance.

‘I love living in London, and I enjoy staying fit and healthy so I couldn’t have asked for any better than this. I am excited to see what the next few months hold in store.’
